Lenggong to Gain UNESCO Global Geopark Recognition in May

Paris: Lenggong is poised to achieve a significant milestone as it will be officially recognized as Malaysia's third UNESCO Global Geopark on May 23 in Paris. This recognition will enhance Malaysia's position within the global network of world-class geoparks.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced that the recognition follows a comprehensive presentation at the 11th International Global Geoparks Conference held in Chile last year. Lenggong will join the UNESCO Global Geopark network, having been designated a National Geopark in December 2021.

The official ceremony for the conferment is scheduled for April 27 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This acknowledgment underscores Lenggong's geological, archaeological, and natural heritage value, meeting UNESCO's stringent criteria.

Dr. Shamsul Anuar shared these details with Bernama during a dinner and networking session related to the Lenggong Geopark Academic Visit program and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Lenggong Geopark. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was also present at the event.

As the Member of Parliament for Lenggong and Chairman of Lenggong Geopark, Dr. Shamsul Anuar emphasized that this recognition not only highlights Lenggong's heritage but also acts as a catalyst for local socio-economic development through sustainable tourism. He pointed out the significance of the Bukit Bunuh site, which is pivotal in the study of early human evolution and Earth's history.

He expressed confidence that Lenggong's status will boost tourism and contribute to the local economy, establishing it as a leading global tourism destination with widespread benefits for the nation.
