MACC Reduces High-Profile Case Investigation Time to Six Months

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has shortened the investigation period for high-profile cases from one and a half years to just six months, thanks to the implementation of new approaches, including upskilling officers and utilising the latest technology. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that the improvement of investigation modules and systems and the review of outdated procedures have been key in achieving this efficiency.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, one of the main factors enabling the shorter investigation timeline is the enhancement of officers' skills and knowledge. Azam highlighted that technological advancements have significantly reduced the need for manpower in surveillance operations. "About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses," he explained.

Azam made these remarks during a press conference held after attending the 2025 MACC-NTU International Law Enforcement Programme Convocation. He further mentioned that the MACC has developed strategic collaborations with external parties to enhance its investigation capabilities, particularly in technical aspects and financial forensics. International cooperation plays a crucial role in tracing and recovering assets abroad, with partnerships such as the one with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants aiding in asset tracing and forensic accounting.

While acknowledging a rise in reports from 2020 to April 2025, totaling 34,819, Azam expressed that mass recruitment of MACC officers is not the primary solution. Instead, he emphasized the importance of adopting the right approach to combat corruption. In the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals, with 2,479 prosecuted and 1,274 convicted.

The MACC's financial enforcement efforts have yielded substantial outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion. At the convocation event, 250 individuals graduated from the programme and have been appointed as new MACC officers.
