Kuala lumpur: Malaysia is looking to Japan's waste separation and recycling practices as it seeks to make environmentally responsible habits part of everyday life and accelerate the country's transition towards a circular economy. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming highlighted that Japan's efficient waste management, particularly its practice of separating waste at the source, could offer valuable insights for Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga mentioned that Japan is renowned for its effective waste management system and strong culture of cleanliness. He emphasized that the practice of separating waste at the source is deeply embedded in Japanese daily life, offering a model for Malaysia to emulate. Nga stated, "Good habits must start from young. We should teach our children about waste separation, recycling, and keeping our surroundings clean, so that cleanliness becomes part of our culture and not something we do only because of enforcement."
Nga announced that Malaysia and Japan are poised to enhance cooperation in promoting the circular economy and modernizing waste management through a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two nations. The MoU, approved by the Malaysian Cabinet last month, aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise, technology, and best practices.
During a courtesy visit to Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata at the ambassador's official residence, Nga discussed the potential collaboration. He noted that Malaysia has already implemented several measures to support the transition, including the National Circular Economy Blueprint, the establishment of the National Circular Economy Council (NCEC), mandates for recycling facilities in shopping malls, and efforts to reduce single-use plastic bags.
Nga expressed optimism that combining Japan's experience and technological expertise with Malaysia's ongoing reforms could expedite the transition towards cleaner, greener, and more sustainable urban environments. Meanwhile, Ambassador Shikata extended an invitation to the Malaysian delegation to attend GREENEXPO 2027 in Yokohama, offering further opportunities for collaboration in areas such as smart and sustainable cities.
