Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Finland have committed to bolstering their cooperation in key sectors, focusing primarily on high-technology transfer, satellite advancements, and educational systems. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan highlighted Finland's recognized expertise and capabilities in these areas following discussions with his Finnish counterpart, Elina Valtonen.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized Finland's proficiency in high technology and satellite capabilities, as well as its robust educational framework. Malaysia has already adapted this educational approach in two schools located in Damansara and Cyberjaya. The bilateral meeting took place ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, scheduled to occur at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Despite limited trade relations, Mohamad noted that Malaysia and Finland share a common perspective on prioritizing global security. In addition to the meeting with Finland, Mohamad also engaged in discussions with ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn, expressing gratitude for the support Malaysia received during its ASEAN Chairmanship this year.
Furthermore, several issues discussed with the ASEAN Secretary-General will be refined and presented to the heads of state. Dr Kao expressed appreciation for Malaysia's leadership role, particularly in mediating the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. The upcoming ASEAN Summit is poised to be a significant event, aiming to enhance cooperation and address regional and global challenges.
Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair this year marks its fifth tenure since the bloc's establishment in 1967, with previous chairmanships occurring in 2015, 2005, 1997, and 1977.
