Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Indonesia will resume their annual consultation, which was last held in 2017, according to Unity Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his delegation are scheduled to visit Jakarta on July 29 to attend the consultation and events related to the ASEAN Secretariat.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision to resume the annual consultation was reached during the Prime Minister's recent visit to Indonesia and his meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The meeting, held last Friday, fostered a lively and positive atmosphere conducive to discussing the resumption of these important talks.
Fahmi highlighted that the session would serve as a crucial platform for leaders of both nations to exchange views and chart the way forward on key issues involving Malaysia and Indonesia. One of the notable issues on the agenda is the Ambalat maritime boundary dispute, which has persisted for over two to three decades. Fahmi emphasized that the upcoming discussions are expected to be the beginning of a resolution process rather than a conclusion.
Previously, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that Malaysia would seek a win-win outcome with Indonesia regarding the Ambalat border issue. Earlier media reports indicated that Anwar and Prabowo had affirmed both countries' commitment to accelerating strategic cooperation in various fields, including a peaceful resolution of the Ambalat dispute and mutually beneficial joint development in the maritime border region.
