Malaysia and Myanmar Commit to Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Kuala Lumpur:Malaysia and Myanmar have agreed to enhance their bilateral relations by focusing on people-centric cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, education, agri-food, energy, healthcare, and capacity building.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that both countries are committed to enhancing collaboration while addressing necessary issues. He acknowledged the historic relations between the two countries and expressed the desire to further strengthen these ties despite recent challenges.

Anwar highlighted the potential of economic ties between Kuala Lumpur and Yangon, noting that bilateral economic activities have increased by more than 140 percent year-on-year. He described this growth as impressive and indicative of the strong economic potential between the two nations.

During a joint media conference with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, Anwar emphasized Malaysia's open and frank communication with Myanmar, appreciating the latter's transparency in sharing its perspectives. This cooperative approach is seen as crucial for fortifying bilateral relations.

Addressing Myanmar's domestic situation, Anwar conveyed Malaysia's concerns regarding democratic reforms while recognizing the complexity of issues in a multi-ethnic nation. He also welcomed Myanmar's commitment to engaging with all parties to prevent further violence escalation.

Anwar expressed support for statements made by President Min Aung Hlaing during a previous meeting in Bangkok, particularly regarding equitable access to field hospitals and continued dialogue with all parties to maintain peace. He stressed the importance of Min Aung Hlaing's visit for both countries and the broader region, affirming Malaysia's commitment to enhancing collaboration and integrating Myanmar into the ASEAN community without prejudice.
