Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to expedite several border connectivity projects and proceed with the development of special border economic zones to strengthen bilateral cooperation and achieve a trade target of $30 billion by 2027. Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, described his meeting with Thailand's Prime Minister as substantive, with discussions focused on resolving outstanding issues and enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, both leaders emphasized the significance of their nations' historical, cultural, and economic ties, recognizing the need for enhanced collaboration. During a joint press conference with Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Anwar highlighted agreements reached prior to their visit to Bukit Kayu Hitam and Sadao, noting the unique program extending beyond capital cities to border areas. This visit underscores the Thai Prime Minister's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Discussions included the proposed Second Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok Bridge, which both leaders agreed to expedite. This project aims to improve connectivity from Perlis and Kedah to Penang, benefiting southern Thailand and Kelantan. Additionally, an initial proposal to revive the Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok railway link was discussed. Anwar stated that the development of special border economic zones and streamlined immigration and customs procedures are crucial to improving cross-border movement.

Anwar emphasized the commitment to achieving a $30 billion bilateral trade target by 2027, urging foreign and trade ministers to focus on this goal. The Thai Prime Minister's two-day visit, his first since reappointment in March 2026, highlights the practical nature of Malaysia-Thailand relations, particularly in border connectivity, trade, energy cooperation, food security, and regional stability.

Physical and rail connectivity is a central theme of the visit, with 40% of Malaysia-Thailand trade passing through cross-border commercial cargo. The Prime Ministers will officiate the opening of a new road alignment connecting Malaysian and Thai complexes at Bukit Kayu Hitam. Anwar's Facebook post also mentioned discussions on cooperation in the halal and semiconductor industries, emphasizing regional connectivity projects and enhancing cross-border economic activities.
