Malaysia Awaits Finance Ministry’s Decision on MotoGP Contract Renewal

Kuala lumpur: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is on standby for the final verdict from the Ministry of Finance (MOF) concerning the renewal of the contract to host the Malaysian Grand Prix (GP), which is due to expire next year, stated Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She expressed the government's general support for extending the contract and noted that the ministry would provide additional information to the MOF.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Yeoh has already engaged with Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder of the MotoGP, to relay the government's intention to renew the contract. However, she mentioned that the Finance Ministry typically requires data to ensure that the expenditure for hosting the MotoGP will be justified and yield economic benefits for Malaysia. The event has previously created job opportunities, with around 4,000 people employed last year. Ticket sales have surpassed 90% this year, and there has been an uptick in tourists purchasing tickets.

Minister Yeoh shared these insights with reporters following a working visit to the Raja Muda Sports Complex in Kampung Baru, which is undergoing upgrades for the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Academy's development.

Earlier, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif indicated that the company is nearing the conclusion of its discussions with Dorna Sports regarding the new contract's duration. Azhan Shafriman mentioned that specifics about whether the contract will span a continuous five-year period or follow a 3+2 structure will only be disclosed after obtaining the necessary approvals.

The recent 2025 Malaysian GP, which wrapped up last Sunday, successfully drew more than 190,977 spectators over its three-day duration.
