Malaysia Backs South Korea’s APEC Energy Transition Goals

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia fully supports South Korea's goals for the 15th APEC Energy Ministers Meeting (APEC EMM15), themed 'Sustainable Growth through Innovative and Inclusive Transition', as they align with the nation's energy transition agenda, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah highlighted that the goals resonate with Malaysia's priorities of balancing energy security, sustainability, and affordability.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah emphasized that energy has been central to APEC's mission of fostering growth. He noted the importance of ensuring that energy transitions are just and orderly, especially for developing economies. During his remarks at the APEC EMM15, he stated that the policy directions and priorities pursued are crucial for this purpose.

The meeting at the Nurimaru APEC House marked the beginning of a two-day event attended by energy ministers from 21 APEC member economies. Officials from key international organizations like the International Energy Agency and the World Bank also participated to share their initiatives on the global energy agenda.

Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, expressed Malaysia's strong support for APEC's focus on advancing clean energy technologies and enhancing regional connectivity. He recognized the progress made by APEC in reducing energy intensity and increasing the share of renewable energy.

He mentioned the Economic Working Group's (EWG) contributions in areas such as hydrogen and carbon neutrality pathways, which have provided valuable insights for member economies. Fadillah also discussed cooperation on grid resilience and clean energy supply chains as vital for shaping collaborative solutions.

Malaysia, he said, is committed to deepening cooperation on innovation and digitalization, including the use of artificial intelligence in energy systems. Fadillah emphasized the importance of advancing policy dialogue on financing frameworks and green investments to accelerate transition.

He further noted that Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap outlines a plan to increase renewable energy capacity to 70 percent by 2050. Fadillah concluded by expressing Malaysia's readiness to work with APEC members to ensure impactful initiatives that drive growth and enable a fair and inclusive energy transition.
