Malaysia Capable Of Managing Data Strategically, Says Gobind

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has sufficient capability to access, manage, and strategically leverage data with a high degree of resilience in its aspiration to become an artificial intelligence (AI) nation, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo emphasized the importance of data sovereignty, stating that it is crucial for realising Malaysia's AI ambitions and must be supported by resilience to generate economic value, boost productivity, and enhance competitiveness.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gobind Singh Deo highlighted that Malaysia possesses the necessary capability to implement accurate safeguards, allowing the nation to make independent decisions regarding AI use and its benefits' distribution. This statement was made during a question-and-answer session in response to Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) regarding governmental efforts to include state initiatives such as the Selangor Dark Fibre Network to ensure data sovereignty for security and national interests.

Gobind further elaborated that the government has fortified the country's digital security and governance ecosystem through policies and legislation, including the 13th Malaysia Plan, Digital Malaysia Blueprint 2030, and several cybersecurity strategies and acts. The effort focuses on five main elements: authentic data governance, control over strategic data, trusted digital infrastructure, digital resilience, and AI capability development through data, talent, and innovation.

In response to Amirudin's supplementary question about Malaysia's preparedness for geopolitical AI competition, Gobind stated that the government considers geopolitical factors, domestic needs, and federal-state cooperation in creating a secure national AI strategy. A Data Centre Task Force (DCTF) has been established to coordinate the development of data centres, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure.

Gobind also addressed a question from Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN-Setiu) on potential collaboration between the Digital Ministry and the Finance Ministry for local technology incentives. He confirmed that discussions through DCTF involve various ministries and agencies, examining requirements and incentives to attract data centre investments in Malaysia, ensuring alignment with the latest technology and local industry interests.
