Malaysia Continues Pursuit of Gold at Asian Games

Aichi-Nagoya:Malaysia The Malaysian team concluded today's events at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games without securing additional gold medals. Efforts to enhance the nation's gold tally will resume tomorrow, with track cycling featuring prominently as Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, known as The Pocket Rocketman, leads the charge.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the national sepaktakraw team settled for a silver medal in the regu event, completing their campaign with one gold and one silver. This outcome followed their significant achievement of ending a 36-year wait to reclaim the gold in the Asian Games team regu event.

In contrast, the national athletics team ended their Aichi-Nagoya campaign without any medals, as the final representatives did not reach the podium. However, Grace Wong Xiu Mei's performance in the women's hammer throw final, where she achieved a season best of 64.15 meters and finished seventh, was a highlight. This marks a positive step for Grace after recovering from injury, boosting her motivation for next year's SEA Games.

Malaysia has already met its original target of six gold medals, with key contributions from athletes like Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari, who successfully defended their squash singles titles. The contingent now aims to seize remaining opportunities to surpass the country's record of nine gold medals at a single Asian Games.

Attention will turn tomorrow to the track cycling individual sprint event at the Izu Velodrome, where Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang will compete after missing the previous Games in Hangzhou 2022. His participation, along with that of Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, positions track cycling as a leading hope for Malaysia to expand its medal count.
