Kuala Lampur:Malaysia is intensifying efforts to prepare for potential incidents involving falling space objects, such as satellite or rocket debris, by conducting simulation exercises and refining disaster operating procedures.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Chang Lih Kang highlighted the implementation of the Space Accident Simulation Exercise (ExLAKA) as a platform to test and evaluate the nation's response capabilities in the event of such incidents. ExLAKA Phase 1 took place on November 26 and 27 last year, while a more complex Phase 2 was conducted on October 1. A full-scale exercise is planned for early 2027.
The results and findings from these exercises will be used to enhance the Space Disaster Standard Operating Procedures (PTO) 4.0. Chang emphasized the importance of having clearer, better-coordinated procedures for all relevant agencies in case of a space object accident.
Additionally, the Investigation Document Version 3.0, which outlines procedures for investigating suspected space objects, has been updated based on the Space Authority Division's (BPAngkasa) field experiences. Coordination was further strengthened with the inclusion of space accident incidents under Directive No. 1 of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) following a meeting on January 28 this year. This change allows affected victims to receive NADMA social financial assistance, with operational costs covered by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through BPAngkasa.
MOSTI also plans to establish a National Trust Account for environmental restoration in case remedial action is required. Coordination of airspace management is being addressed, with BPAngkasa joining the Joint Airspace Industry Committee and the Technical Airspace Committee, led by the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. This aims to manage traffic in the airspace-space segment and regulate launch clearances, with BPAngkasa considered for permanent membership.
