Myanmar to Repatriate Nationals from Malaysia at Their Own Expense

Kuala Lumpur:Myanmar has expressed its readiness to repatriate its nationals from Malaysia on a large scale, assuming the costs involved, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, more than 10,493 Myanmar citizens and personnel have already been repatriated via flights and naval ships. Further arrangements for repatriation will be discussed between Malaysia's Ministry of Home Affairs and Myanmar's authorities. Anwar expressed Malaysia's appreciation for Myanmar's willingness to accept its nationals, highlighting that few countries are prepared to undertake such large-scale repatriation at their own expense.

The plan involves repatriating the remaining Myanmar nationals in compliance with established rules and procedures, pending verification of their records. Anwar noted that between 3,000 and 4,000 Myanmar nationals currently in Malaysian immigration depots are expected to be repatriated, contingent on verification of their nationality and any criminal records.

Anwar Ibrahim thanked Myanmar for its cooperation in facilitating the return of its nationals and for its collaborative approach. Discussions between the leaders also covered the repatriation of Myanmar nationals of all ethnicities in Malaysia, emphasizing a voluntary, dignified, and safe process.

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing announced plans to send a naval ship to Malaysia to expedite the repatriation process for confirmed citizens. He requested assistance from the Malaysian government to facilitate this effort and underscored a commitment to strengthening labor cooperation between the two countries, ensuring protections for Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia.

Min Aung Hlaing added that both governments would work together to ensure workplace safety, legal entry, and protection against exploitation for Myanmar workers, while effectively implementing bilateral agreements. He expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government for its support and care for Myanmar workers.
