Kuala lumpur: Malaysia is currently experiencing a shortage of approximately 100,000 engineers necessary to support the country's development needs, as stated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The current number of registered engineers falls short of achieving the ideal ratio of one engineer per 100 Malaysians.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta revealed that Malaysia has only 200,000 registered engineers, leaving a significant gap of 100,000 to meet the demand. This statement was made during the 2025 National Engineering Convention (NEC 2025), where he emphasized the importance of addressing this shortage through enhancements in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs.
Nanta expressed support for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's announcement to expand TVET programs, targeting 60,000 participants. He believes that this initiative will significantly contribute to achieving the target of 100,000 additional engineers.
Furthermore, Nanta discussed the challenge of retaining engineering graduates within the field, as many are drawn to other sectors offering higher starting salaries. The government is exploring strategies to encourage graduates to remain in engineering careers, ensuring they stay motivated and committed.
The Ministry of Works (KKR) is also investigating strategies to make engineering more appealing, focusing on creating an environment with better job prospects for graduates. This includes initiatives to enhance the attractiveness of the engineering profession.
In a separate issue, Nanta addressed a recent motorcycle accident on Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari, attributing responsibility to the state government and its appointed concessionaire. He urged the concessionaire to take immediate action if the accident was caused by road damage, to prevent future incidents.
The accident, reported by Infrasel Sdn Bhd and the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), occurred near a housing project where road conditions had become sandy. The concessionaire is currently undertaking cleaning operations and plans to begin road grading soon to ensure safety.
