Malaysia Firm on Unconditional Support for Independent Palestine: Mohamad

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia remains firmly committed to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state without any preconditions, stated Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He expressed concerns over conditions set by the New York Declaration for the creation of such a state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized Malaysia's stance at the 58th ASEAN Day celebration, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Mohamad asserted that Malaysia supports an independent Palestine and will not interfere with its governance. He voiced discomfort with the New York Declaration's conditions, which, he argued, do not align with Malaysia's foreign policy.

Mohamad highlighted that Malaysia's concerns have not yet been formally conveyed to the United Nations (UN), as discussions on the document have been limited to a roundtable meeting. Although 122 countries, including Malaysia, endorsed the proposal at the UN, the final document's drafting involved only a select few countries.

The UN high-level conference on a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue ended on July 31 with the adoption of the "New York Call" and the "New York Declaration," both backing a two-state solution. Mohamad noted that these documents fail to address the core issue of the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.
