Malaysia Prepared To Mediate Conflict In Southern Thailand – PM Anwar

Kota bharu: Malaysia is ready to mediate the conflict in Southern Thailand and work to end the tension between the two sides, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized Malaysia's commitment to finding peace in the region to ensure that Islamic studies can continue and the Malay language is preserved.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stated that the situation in Southern Thailand is an internal matter for the Thai government. He has communicated with Thai officials, who have shown a willingness to pursue efforts to halt the violence on both sides. Anwar expressed confidence in the Thai leadership's ability to achieve peace and security, which would enable the development of the area, the strengthening of Islamic studies, and the upholding of the Malay language.

Anwar made these remarks while speaking to reporters after attending a goodwill gathering with leaders and students at Pusat Pengajian Pondok Yayasan Islam Kelantan, Taman Sri Cempaka. On August 5, the media reported that Muslim residents in Southern Thailand requested Anwar's involvement as a peacemaker to resolve the long-standing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives over decades.

He also commented on the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, expressing hope for continued peace and tranquility between the two nations. He highlighted Malaysia's role in facilitating the resolution of the border issue between Thailand and Cambodia and praised the swift and effective ceasefire agreement as a significant achievement for ASEAN.

In addition, Anwar announced a RM2.1 million aid package for Pusat Pengajian Pondok Yayasan Islam Kelantan to address damage to the school study center. He assured that the aid would be expedited within a few months, acknowledging the need for attention from the central government to schools managed by the Kelantan Islamic Foundation.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud and Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat were present during the announcement.
