Malaysia Reaffirms Sovereignty Amid Foreign Policy Concerns

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that Malaysia remains sovereign and has not succumbed to any foreign powers in shaping its foreign policy or trade relations. He reiterated that the nation stands independent and is governed by its own laws and principles.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar addressed claims regarding Malaysia potentially yielding to the United States under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART). He clarified that such claims are baseless, highlighting that the agreement does not restrict Malaysia from acting in accordance with its national security interests. Anwar questioned the validity of these claims by pointing out Malaysia's trade agreement with China, emphasizing that the nation is not beholden to the U.S.

Anwar announced his intentions to attend the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa, despite the U.S. decision to boycott the event. He stated that his attendance is at the invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and reaffirmed Malaysia's independent foreign policy stance, underscoring the country's dignity and sovereignty.

In addressing regional concerns, Anwar also made it clear that Malaysia has never backed the 20-point plan for Gaza. Instead, he asserted that the country supports a comprehensive solution for Gaza and Palestine, advocating for recognition of their rights as free and sovereign states while condemning Israeli actions in the West Bank.
