Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the strong diplomatic ties between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain have significantly influenced Malaysia's selection as the host for the Formula One (F1) Bahrain Gulf Air Grand Prix. The country's peaceful environment and its proven capability to organize world-class events also contributed to this decision.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar acknowledged Malaysia's commendable performance as the ASEAN Chair last year, which was recognized as one of the best-managed chairmanships by the Arab world. He emphasized the importance of the good relationship between the two monarchs in facilitating the hosting of the prestigious race. Anwar also credited the national system, the people, and various sectors for maintaining peace and stability, making Malaysia an attractive venue for international events.

Addressing the Semarak Kenegaraan (Patriotism Promotion) programme at Syed Sirajuddin Camp, Anwar expressed confidence in Malaysia's ability to successfully host the F1 event while managing costs effectively. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has agreed to waive the initial USD1 million hosting fee, reducing financial pressure on Malaysia.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, highlighted the government's cautious approach to the proposal, with the priority being to address the people's cost of living and housing needs. He stated the need to assess funding requirements carefully, given the pressing issues affecting the population.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC), which requires approximately RM16 million annually for maintenance to meet motorsports standards, will be the venue for the F1 Bahrain GP from October 2 to 4. This event marks Formula One's return to Sepang after being absent for nine years since the Malaysian Grand Prix was last hosted in 2017 due to rising costs.
