Malaysia Submits Candidacy For Non-permanent UNSC Seat

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has officially submitted its candidacy to rejoin the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member for the 2036-2037 term. Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni emphasized that Malaysia will prioritize UNSC reform, particularly the abolition of the veto, along with global peace and security in its foreign policy.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will reaffirm Malaysia's stance during the National Statement at the 81st UN General Assembly Debate in New York this September. The country seeks to address the veto power, viewing it as unjust and advocating for its abolition or at least its restriction in cases involving violations of international law, such as war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

UNSC reform and global peace and security issues continue to be a top priority in Malaysia's foreign policy. This was reiterated by Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni in response to a question from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) during a session in the Dewan Rakyat, where concerns were raised about the disproportionate veto power held by major nations within the UNSC.
