Kuala Lumpur:The national wheelchair tennis team of Malaysia is aiming to secure two medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games, as stated by coach Talhah Mohd Rahizam.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the team plans to retain the silver medal achieved in the 2022 Hangzhou edition in the men's doubles event through the pair of Mohd Yusshazwan Yusof and Abu Samah Borhan. Additionally, they are targeting a bronze medal in the men's singles event with Mohd Yusshazwan and Abu Samah as key contenders.
During a visit by Malaysia's chef de mission to the Asian Para Games, Tan Chee Keong, to the wheelchair tennis training center at the Jalan Duta Tennis Complex, Talhah expressed the team's aspirations to improve upon their previous performance by securing medals in both singles and doubles events.
Abu Samah highlighted the team's increased chances of retaining the silver medal in the doubles event, as Malaysia is expected to be seeded fourth, allowing them to avoid stronger opponents in the initial rounds. He noted their success in recent tournaments in Italy, where they won gold medals, which has boosted their confidence ahead of the Asian Para Games.
Last month, the duo of Abu Samah and Mohd Yusshazwan claimed victories in the men's doubles titles at the WC50 Cremona, WC50 Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza), and WC50 Alghero tournaments in Italy. The upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games are scheduled to take place from October 18 to 24.
