Kuala lumpur: Malaysia will continue engaging with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand to propose a peace process in response to the border conflict between the two countries, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He mentioned that both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai had expressed appreciation for his initiative to propose a peace process and a ceasefire.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of halting the ongoing conflict by engaging with the respective foreign ministries of Cambodia and Thailand. He has tasked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan with liaising with these ministries and expressed his willingness to personally engage in discussions to halt the fighting. Anwar's comments came after his attendance at the 50th Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals, where Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir were also present.
Anwar has previously stated that the Malaysian government is concerned about the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and its potential impact on Malaysia. BERNAMA reported that the Prime Minister welcomed positive signals from Bangkok and Phnom Penh regarding the implementation of a ceasefire to prevent further conflict. Recent media reports indicated that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in the disputed border area, with both sides blaming each other for initiating the latest confrontation.
The tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been escalating since a deadly incident on May 28 in the Preah Vihear area, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. The two countries have had a longstanding dispute over their 817-kilometre border, which remains undemarcated, straining diplomatic relations for decades.
