Malaysia Urges Trump to Prioritize Peace Efforts, Including in Gaza – PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has made a clear appeal to United States President Donald Trump, urging him to persist in his dedication to promoting peace across regions facing conflict, including the Gaza Strip.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recognized Trump's initiatives in fostering peace. However, he emphasized the necessity for the United States leader to remain committed to achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace that aligns with international expectations.

Prime Minister Anwar expressed his pleasure in hearing directly from President Trump about his determination to secure peace in the most challenging areas. Anwar highlighted Malaysia's support for these efforts and called on the US, along with the global community, to continue working towards these goals.

Anwar made these comments after attending the signing of the KL Peace Accord by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, an event witnessed by Trump on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, which kicked off today.

In addition to peace talks, Anwar discussed various issues with Trump after being invited into the presidential vehicle, 'The Beast.' Anwar humorously noted the breach of security protocol, but appreciated the opportunity to discuss other matters discreetly.

This visit marks the first time in a decade that a sitting US president has traveled to Malaysia, coinciding with the commencement of the ASEAN Summit. The summit, themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' will run until October 28, concluding with joint declarations on regional priorities concerning peace, prosperity, and sustainable growth.

As the current ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will host its final summit before passing the chairmanship to the Philippines in 2026.
