Malaysian Bar Conveys Condolences On Passing Of Tun Abdul Hamid

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Bar today conveyed its deepest condolences on the passing of former Chief Justice Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad, who died today, coinciding with the first day of Ramadan 1447. Its president, Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab, said Tun Abdul Hamid had served the Judiciary with distinction for decades.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tun Abdul Hamid's tenure at the apex of the Federal Court marked the culmination of a judicial career defined by discipline, clarity of reasoning and firm adherence to constitutional structure. Mohamad Ezri noted, 'His judgments remain studied for their precision and directness, reflecting a judge who believed that the law must be applied with rigour and without fear or favour.'

He further mentioned that many in the legal community would remember Tun Abdul Hamid for his oft-repeated reminder to simply 'buat kerja'. This phrase carried significance as it underscored his belief that institutions earned respect through the steady and competent discharge of duty, with judges writing their judgments and lawyers preparing their cases. Mohamad Ezri emphasized, 'Each must perform their role with integrity. That insistence on professional discipline resonated then and continues to resonate today.'

Abdul Hamid's illustrious judicial career began with his appointment as a Judicial Commissioner on May 1, 1990. He was subsequently appointed as a High Court Judge in 1992, a Court of Appeal Judge on September 1, 2000, and a Federal Court Judge on August 1, 2003. He later served as Chief Justice from December 2007 until October 2008.
