Malaysia’s Economic Strategy Shifts Towards Resilience

Accra:Malaysia's economic priorities are transitioning from a focus on efficiency to enhancing resilience as the nation exceeds growth expectations despite global uncertainties.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) stated that this shift is part of the country's broader strategy to strengthen its economic foundation. Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, MIDA's chairman, emphasized the importance of preparing Malaysia to seize opportunities while remaining resilient against unpredictable challenges.

Tengku Zafrul highlighted several key fiscal reforms, such as fuel subsidy rationalization and the implementation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which have bolstered the country's public finances. He stressed that economic reform should be complemented by measures to protect vulnerable populations while enhancing national capacity.

In his leadership address at the Youth Economic Forum, he outlined the necessity of increasing incomes by aligning wage growth with productivity, creating higher-paying jobs, and fostering entrepreneurship. He noted the significant impact of evolving trade routes and the dual influence of artificial intelligence on the workforce, which is transforming traditional entry-level positions.

The former Investment, Trade and Industry Minister also pointed out that Malaysia's youthful population could be a significant economic advantage if it leads to increased productivity, innovation, and the creation of high-value jobs and businesses. He underscored the importance of ensuring that investments result in tangible benefits for Malaysians, including high-income employment opportunities and the integration of small and medium-sized enterprises into global supply chains.

Tengku Zafrul concluded by asserting that capital investment should aim to strengthen businesses, and technological advancements should be utilized to enhance workforce skills.
