Putrajaya: The official visit of Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to Malaysia is set to enhance bilateral cooperation, with a focus on trade, investment, the halal industry, education, tourism, youth, and sports. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized the importance of this relationship, noting that the Maldives is Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner in South Asia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the visit included the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and two Exchange of Notes (EoNs) between the two nations. These agreements, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Mohamed Muizzu, are aimed at expanding cooperation in key sectors. The MoUs cover areas such as tourism, sports cooperation, and healthcare collaboration, while the EoNs focus on diplomatic training and the establishment of bilateral consultations.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed optimism about the visit, hoping it would strengthen the strategic ties between Malaysia and the Maldives, benefiting both countries. He stated this sentiment in a post on his official Facebook page, expressing a desire for the continued growth of this warm relationship.
The official welcoming ceremony for Dr Mohamed Muizzu took place at Perdana Putra, Putrajaya, marking the start of his four-day official visit to Malaysia. This visit follows his recent assumption of office as President in November 2023 and represents his first official trip to the country at the invitation of the Malaysian Prime Minister.
