Kuala lumpur: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has officially filed a police report concerning a viral video that allegedly spreads false accusations about the development of shophouses in the Northeast District.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MBPP also reported the incident to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further investigation into the video, which was uploaded by a TikTok user on December 1. The council described the video as containing misleading, unfactual, and defamatory claims that could mislead the public and damage MBPP's reputation.
The statement from MBPP confirmed that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is currently investigating the council's report. MBPP expressed its readiness to cooperate fully with any legal proceedings if the case is brought to court.
MBPP detailed that the Planning Permission application for the development was submitted by M/s Brilliantcap Holdings Sdn. Bhd. on June 9, 2016. They issued a written notice to 10 adjacent lot owners, informing them of their right to submit objections, but no objections were received by the deadline.
The One Stop Centre Committee Meeting (MJOSC) approved the application on February 21, 2017, and the building plan received approval on October 20, 2021, after feedback from all technical departments. The Commencement of Work (COW) approval was granted on December 15, 2022, for the construction of eight units of three-storey shophouses on Jalan Kampung Relau and one block on Lorong Relau 3.
MBPP also mentioned that the Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) Report was approved on November 5, 2015, and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) approved the development plan on June 28, 2016, before the formal Planning Permission was granted.
The council emphasized its openness to any official discussions or queries and urged all parties to seek complete information before making claims on social media. The TikTok video in question, titled 'Tiada Perjuangan Tanpa Pengorbanan' (No Struggle Without Sacrifice), criticized MBPP for approving a commercial project near a residential area.
