MBPP Files MCMC Report Over Viral TikTok Videos Alleging Corruption

Penang: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), seeking an investigation into two viral TikTok videos that allege corruption and double standards among council personnel. The videos have prompted MBPP to take action against the content creator for what they describe as slanderous content.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MBPP stated that four city councillors, Tan Soo Siang, R. Harikrishnan, Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali, and Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, have also lodged a police report against the individual responsible for uploading the videos. MBPP expressed disappointment over the misleading claims made in the videos, which they argue are not based on accurate facts or data. The council emphasized its readiness to pursue legal action to protect its reputation from unsubstantiated accusations.

The controversial videos accuse MBPP of accepting bribes to allow foreign nationals to operate businesses and allege that enforcement officers practice double standards. In response, MBPP has declared its intention to address these allegations through appropriate legal channels.

In a related incident, the Seberang Perak City Council (MBSP) has initiated an internal probe following another viral video purportedly showing one of its officers involved in corrupt activities. MBSP held a meeting with the business owner implicated in the video to collect detailed information about the circumstances depicted.

MBSP has assured that a comprehensive internal investigation is ongoing to examine the claims presented in the video. The council has urged the business owner to report any credible evidence of corruption to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. MBSP reiterated its firm stance against any form of corruption or abuse of power by its personnel.

The video, which lasts two minutes, features a man accusing MBSP officers of abusing their authority at his friend's business location. The allegations include extortion, customer threats, wrongful detention of foreigners, and an incident where a local man was allegedly slapped after being mistaken for a foreign national.
