Melaka: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has allocated RM310 million to develop connectivity infrastructure as part of the Melaka Smart City initiative. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced the funding to support the state government's ambition to transform Melaka into a digital heritage city, aligning with its heritage status.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MCMC has engaged in discussions to facilitate the implementation of the Smart Melaka 2035 blueprint, which serves as a guide for the state's digital transformation towards sustainable, liveable, and resilient development. Fahmi shared these insights during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Melaka government and MCMC on connectivity infrastructure development for the Melaka Smart City initiative.
The MoU, witnessed by Fahmi and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, was signed by MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Melaka state secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad. Fahmi outlined several key initiatives to be implemented, including the development of smart connectivity infrastructure, public safety enhancements, and traffic management improvements through the Melaka Network Operation and Command Centre.
Additionally, the initiative plans to incorporate smart technology-based heritage tourism management and flood management strategies using early warning systems and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. Smart connectivity infrastructure will form a robust foundation for the smart city, particularly through the deployment of fibre-optic networks, smart poles, and public Wi-Fi to enhance internet access across Melaka.
This effort aims to bolster the local digital economy by strengthening communication infrastructure to support the tourism, retail, logistics, and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sectors, fostering a more conducive environment for investment. During a subsequent press conference, Fahmi emphasized the Communications Ministry's recognition of the state government's clear direction and foresight in its digitization efforts across various public services.
He noted that digital infrastructure is fundamental to these services and highlighted that, unlike some MCMC initiatives, this project encompasses the entire state, benefiting all residents. Fahmi expressed confidence in launching the first phase within the first six months of next year.
