Sarawak: Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee emphasised the importance of accurate communication and responsible reporting, especially when addressing public issues. Speaking at the DUN Nangka Media Appreciation Night here last night, he said journalists play a crucial role in shaping public perception and should uphold professionalism in disseminating news.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Annuar stressed the significance of accuracy in media reporting, noting that once a statement is reported, it becomes part of the public domain and cannot be erased from the internet or social media. He shared his approach of limiting comments to his areas of responsibility, such as education, innovation, and talent development, while avoiding political remarks or statements outside his portfolio.
Annuar highlighted the importance of timely and truthful updates, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic when accurate communication was vital amidst widespread rumours and misinformation. He recounted the decision to provide live updates almost every evening during the crisis to explain the situation and reassure the public.
On the welfare of journalists, Annuar announced plans to sponsor health screening packages for members of the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA), emphasising the importance of prioritising health, especially for those over 35. He assured that funding would be provided for checks on cholesterol, kidney, and liver health.
Annuar expressed appreciation for the media's support over the years, acknowledging their role in delivering accurate information to the public. He praised the professionalism of SJA members, who number around 40, for ensuring news is delivered responsibly, avoiding uncertainty and disunity. He thanked journalists for their cooperation and coverage during his tenure and pledged continued collaboration to strengthen public trust.
