Melaka Takes Proactive Measures for Northeast Monsoon Season

Melaka: The Melaka government has implemented extensive preparations to manage potential disasters during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season, which started last week. These measures include the coordination of all relevant agencies to address possible flood situations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin stated that the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), led by the State Secretary, has been conducting regular meetings to monitor and discuss recent developments throughout the MTL period.

Rais noted that although the monsoon has commenced, Melaka is currently in a stable condition with no major issues reported. He emphasized the importance of remaining on high alert, saying, "The JPBN has received a briefing from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on the weather forecast and preparedness measures for the MTL. The committee meets regularly to report the latest information on monitoring efforts and the readiness of all agencies involved."

He also mentioned that monitoring at high-risk locations is being conducted periodically, and early warnings will be issued if any disaster risks are detected to allow residents to take necessary precautions. Temporary evacuation centres have been fully equipped, focusing on residents' welfare to ensure their comfort and safety.

Earlier, MetMalaysia announced that the 2025/2026 MTL, which began on November 14, is expected to last until March next year, with predictions of five to seven episodes of continuous heavy rainfall.
