MetMalaysia Forecasts Flood and Heatwaves During 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon

Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has projected a heightened risk of floods and extreme heat during the upcoming 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon season, set to commence on October 27 and last until March of the following year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia's director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip indicated that between three and five episodes of continuous heavy rain are anticipated from November to January. These conditions may lead to flooding in low-lying areas and regions near rivers. Dr. Mohd Hisham also warned that strong northeasterly winds could result in rough seas and elevated sea levels in the South China Sea.

As the monsoon progresses into its final phase, from January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decrease, especially in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Dr. Mohd Hisham highlighted that this period may experience hot, dry weather with an increased likelihood of extreme heatwaves, exacerbated by the ongoing Super El Niño phenomenon.

MetMalaysia has urged the public to stay vigilant and prepared for varying weather conditions throughout the monsoon season. The department advises individuals to keep abreast of weather information, advisories, forecasts, and warnings through official channels, including their website, the myCuaca mobile app, social media, or by contacting their hotline.
