MMEA Seizes Nine Boats In Terengganu Waters

Terengganu: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Terengganu seized eight passenger boats and one cargo boat in a special operation conducted over the weekend in the waters off Pulau Redang in Kuala Nerus and Pulau Perhentian in Besut.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, its director, Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang, stated that all boats were detained due to several offences, including operating without a licence, carrying excessive passengers, and violating licence conditions. He mentioned that another offence detected was the lack of life jackets, which, along with carrying more cargo, disregards passenger safety.

He emphasised that the MMEA will not compromise with any boat operators who prioritise profits over safety. He also noted that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified, especially in tourist hotspots, to ensure that the country's waters are always safe and controlled.

He reminded all boat operators to comply with the law and prioritise passenger safety. The public is also urged to channel information about any suspicious activities through the Terengganu State Maritime Operations Centre at 013-7464357 or the 999 emergency line, which operates 24 hours.
