MOE Initiatives Enhance Student Safety and Well-being: Wong

Kuala lumpur: Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh announced measures to enhance student mental well-being and safety within schools. The initiatives include the formation of a Special Committee on Educational Institution Safety Reform, incorporating stakeholders from the ministry, academic experts, government agencies, and NGOs.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong highlighted the ministry's engagement with organizations such as UNICEF and the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) to gather feedback and recommendations for improving the current situation and preventing unwanted incidents. These comments were made after Wong officiated the Net Energy Metering (NEM) 3.0 solar power generation system at a Government-Aided School in Malaysia.

Further efforts by the ministry involve intensified student mental health screenings, counseling services, and peer support programs through guidance and counseling teachers. Wong emphasized the seriousness with which the ministry treats incidents involving students and has directed all State Education Departments and District Education Offices to adhere to guidelines and report cases promptly.

The ministry has also bolstered its response mechanism with an official circular on SOP137, outlining procedures for reporting and managing student disciplinary cases. Complementing these efforts is the MADANI Generation Character Development Programme, which supports holistic student development by balancing intellectual, personal, and spiritual growth.

Wong stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach involving various parties, including the ministry, education departments, schools, parents, and the community, in addressing students' challenges. He urged parents and the community to focus on children's well-being and development, ensuring they grow up in a healthy, safe, and supportive environment.
