MOH and MOE to Discuss Potential School Closures Amid Rising Influenza Cases

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is set to engage in discussions with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to evaluate the possibility of closing schools should there be a surge in influenza clusters. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad highlighted that a significant portion of the outbreaks has been traced back to schools and kindergartens.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that the decision to close schools lies with the MOE. The MOH's role is to provide guidance and advise symptomatic individuals to avoid attending school, wear face masks, and adhere to standard operating procedures like using hand sanitizer and washing hands.

Dr Dzulkefly mentioned that any necessary decisions would be made in consultation with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, following a detailed assessment of the situation. He revealed that 97 influenza clusters have been reported as of Epidemiological Week (ME) 40, predominantly affecting schools and kindergartens. The spread of the virus has been tracked through the Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) surveillance systems.

He noted a significant rise in influenza clusters from the previous week, underscoring the importance of focusing efforts on educational institutions. However, he assured the public that most reported cases have been mild and encouraged patients to rest, stay hydrated, and continue practicing health protocols.

The MOH previously reported 97 influenza A and B infection clusters in ME 40/2025, a stark increase from 14 clusters the week before, with educational institutions being the primary sites of infection. The rise in cases has been noted across all states, with Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Penang, Johor, and Kedah recording the highest numbers.
