Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is currently assessing a proposal to merge public health enforcement functions and synchronize the roles of environmental health officers (PKP) and assistant environmental health officers (PPKP). This initiative was highlighted by Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad during a dinner function for public health enforcement officers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposal was put forward by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs). Minister Dzulkefly assured that a comprehensive review of the proposal is being conducted to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the enforcement system, aligning it with contemporary requirements.
The event was attended by key figures, including the deputy director-general of health (Public Health), Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli, and Cuepacs president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat. Dzulkefly also mentioned his intention to consider officially incorporating World Environmental Health Day into the MOH annual calendar to acknowledge the essential role public health enforcement officers play in maintaining community well-being.
World Environmental Health Day, which is observed every year on September 26, has been recognized by the MOH since 2016 but is yet to be officially listed in the ministry's calendar. Cuepacs president Adnan emphasized that the proposal would not only acknowledge the expertise of enforcement officers but also support their career advancement within the ministry. Additionally, this move aims to bolster the public health sector and improve the delivery of health enforcement services to the public.
