Mohamad Hairul Amir Takes Oath as Perak Senator

Kuala Lumpur:Perak Perak PKR chairman Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri has been sworn in as a Senator, representing the state for a three-year term from September 10, 2026, to September 9, 2029.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 38-year-old Mohamad Hairul Amir took his oath of office before Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah during a ceremony held at the Senate. His appointment fills the vacancy left by Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof, whose term ended on May 24. The Perak State Legislative Assembly elected Mohamad Hairul Amir on September 10, following a motion by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

Awang Bemee highlighted Mohamad Hairul Amir's extensive experience in political leadership, public administration, government relations, community development, and corporate governance, stating it would bring valuable insights to Senate debates. His involvement with statutory bodies, government-linked companies, independent audit committees, and private sector boards has broadened his experience in governance, management, accountability, and integrity.

Awang Bemee expressed hope that Mohamad Hairul Amir would leverage his experience to contribute constructively as a Senator. He also emphasized the Dewan Negara's ongoing role in strengthening Malaysia's parliamentary institution, including through the Parliamentary Service Act 2025, which aims to enhance the principle of separation of powers and the effectiveness of Parliament's checks and balances. This move is seen as crucial for strengthening Parliament's autonomy and ensuring it fulfills its role effectively and independently.

Furthermore, Awang Bemee stated the importance of the Dewan Negara in voicing the concerns of the people and the states, scrutinizing national policies and legislation, and reinforcing the checks and balances within the parliamentary democratic system.

The Dewan Negara is scheduled to convene for the Third Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament from November 30 to December 22.
