Malaysia Begins Repatriation of Myanmar Refugees

Lumut:The MADANI Government has initiated efforts to resolve the longstanding issue of foreign refugee presence in Malaysia, focusing on a phased repatriation process. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that the government is addressing the matter systematically and in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a repatriation program has been finalized for 5,000 Myanmar refugees, with their voluntary return facilitated by an agreement with the Myanmar government. The first phase of this initiative saw 1,476 individuals repatriated from the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in Lumut, Perak, aboard Myanmar Navy vessels.

Saifuddin Nasution emphasized that the issue of foreign refugees, particularly from Myanmar, has been a significant burden for Malaysia, affecting finances, social stability, and security. He stated that resolving such a complex issue requires not only enforcement but also international cooperation, ensuring that processes are conducted in an orderly and phased manner.

Malaysia, though not a signatory to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, is committed to handling the situation with compassion and adherence to ASEAN values. The phased approach ensures national security and sovereignty are not compromised, with future phases of repatriation pending the completion of necessary procedures.

The Home Minister reiterated that the primary goal is to address this longstanding issue while prioritizing the security, welfare, and interests of Malaysian citizens.
