MOHE Yet to Receive Information on Malaysian Students Affected by Golok Attack

Kuala Lumpur: The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) has announced that it has not received any information regarding Malaysian students being affected by the recent attack in Golok, Thailand, which occurred on March 8.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, stated that his ministry is closely monitoring the developments in South Thailand. He mentioned, “Until now, we have no information whether our students (are affected) in terms of injuries or if the victims involved are our students,” during a media briefing after a breaking fast event with ministry staff. He also noted that most Malaysian students in South Thailand pursue their studies independently in religious fields.

The March 8 attack resulted in the deaths of two volunteer police officers and injuries to eight others. Following this incident, Wisma Putra has advised Malaysians to defer any non-essential travel to the areas of Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani.

In a related concern, Zambry provided an update on four Malaysian students who were injured in a separate vehicle crash on the same date. He reported that their condition is stable, although one student remains under hospital observation. Zambry has requested daily updates and tasked Education Malaysia Jordan with preparing daily reports on the situation. However, the ministry is still awaiting further details regarding the students’ return, as their medical condition is still under observation by doctors.
