Mutiara LRT Line Construction to Cause Long-Term Lane Closures in Penang

Penang:Long-term intermittent partial lane closures along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah will be implemented from tomorrow until November 15 to facilitate construction works for the Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) stated that the closures will occur for 45 days from 10 pm to 5 am daily to allow for tree-felling activities. The closures will affect the leftmost lane between the Jalan Sungai Dua intersection and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Padang heading towards Komtar, as well as between Batu Uban Army Camp and Sunny Point heading towards Bayan Lepas. The rightmost lane between Batu Uban Army Camp and the traffic light intersection in both directions will also be closed, with other lanes remaining open to traffic.

Road users are advised to exercise caution when traveling through these areas, with signboards, traffic cones, and flagmen stationed to facilitate traffic control and ensure safety.

Additionally, a long-term closure of lanes along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway will begin tomorrow and continue until August 31, 2029, to accommodate construction works for the Mutiara LRT Line. The 24-hour closure for 1,065 days covers the rightmost lanes in both directions between Gat Lebuh Cecil and Gat Lebuh Noordin, as well as lanes at the Gat Lebuh Cecil junction. The lane for vehicles turning right into Gat Lebuh Cecil will also be affected, while remaining lanes stay open.

Motorists on these routes are urged to drive carefully, with traffic management measures in place to ensure road user safety.

Meanwhile, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) announced that the existing cycling and pedestrian path from the Shell petrol station on Jalan Perusahaan Jelutong to Restoran Ikan Sembilang will be closed from tomorrow. This closure will remain until October 31, 2029, to facilitate the construction of the Mutiara LRT Line viaduct pillars, ensuring the safety of both path users and construction personnel.
