Nekmat Advocates for Vessel Modernisation in 2027 Budget

Kuala Lampur:According to BERNAMA News Agency, the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) is calling for the 2027 Budget to prioritize the modernisation of vessels and fishing equipment to enhance operational efficiency and productivity in the fisheries sector. NEKMAT General Manager Azrin Shah Ismail emphasized the need for advancements in navigation and safety to reduce reliance on subsidies and improve efficiency at sea.

Azrin highlighted the importance of technology adoption, suggesting the use of satellite navigation, sonar, and fish finders to help fishermen maximize yields while conserving resources. He also advocated for leveraging modern technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize fishing operations and decision-making.

To support these efforts, Azrin proposed the development of integrated post-landing facilities, including cold storage and refrigerated seawater technology, to maintain catch quality and boost market prices. He also noted that the government had allocated nearly RM178 million in the 2026 Budget for subsidies and incentives, including living allowances and catch incentives.

Fuel costs remain a significant concern, with subsidies for petrol and diesel being crucial, as they account for a substantial portion of operating costs. Azrin also urged the government to address the high costs of vessel and equipment insurance and suggested expanding financing mechanisms like matching grants or soft loans to assist fishermen with modernisation expenses.

He stressed that the governance of subsidy distribution should be improved through technologies such as the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) to ensure aid reaches active fishermen. The 2027 Budget is set to be presented in Parliament on October 9.
