Kuala terengganu: The Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud Alumni Association (MySESMA) has successfully raised RM1.5 million to upgrade Surau Al-Ghazali at the school here. Its president, Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, stated that the project marks the association's largest contribution in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the completion of the surau in phases over four months from April, along with the successful fundraising, was made possible by the coordinated efforts and dedication of all MySESMA members. Mohd Zubir mentioned that initially, the project seemed challenging due to the substantial amount of funds required, which exceeded RM1 million. However, with persistent efforts, MySESMA managed to complete the project in stages, starting last April, and even finished earlier than expected.
Mohd Zubir expressed pride that every stage of the project, from design and construction to monitoring, had been handled by MySESMA members possessing expertise across various fields. The upgraded Surau Al-Ghazali can now accommodate 800 worshippers at a time, compared to 600 previously.
In a previous initiative, MySESMA donated a semi-high-deck bus worth RM670,000 to Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA) in celebration of this year's Teachers' Day.
