Kuala lumpur: Nearly 500 media practitioners across the nation have received support from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund, accumulating contributions of RM1.3 million, as announced by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. The initiative, driven by the Communications Ministry and executed by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), continues to offer financial assistance to both current and former media professionals in need.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the fund, launched during the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) in 2023, extends welfare support that includes financial aid, medical expenses, and family assistance. Out of the 478 beneficiaries, 56 are Tamil media practitioners. Teo encouraged media professionals seeking assistance to apply through the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA secretariat or her office.
The initiative underscores the MADANI Government's dedication to recognizing the efforts of journalists and safeguarding their welfare. Teo also mentioned that the newly established Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is set to convene its first meeting in November to address industry-related concerns. She expressed confidence in the council's active engagement with media stakeholders and emphasized its need to represent various media forms.
Additionally, Teo urged members of the Tamil media organisation to enroll in artificial intelligence (AI) courses offered by the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR). The institute has expanded its training scope beyond civil servants to include media professionals and the general public. For this year, IPPTAR has planned 80 courses targeting 1,500 participants, with 57 courses completed involving 4,384 participants. Of the 22 AI-related courses scheduled, 16 have been conducted with 814 participants.
Teo expressed optimism about the continued significance of Tamil media as a cultural bridge and a prominent voice for the Indian community.
