Perak: Nearly five million students in 11 Group B states have returned to school today, marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 academic year. This follows the earlier start of the school session yesterday for 632,268 students in Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan, categorized as Group A.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, in Perak, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh reported that 329,344 students from 1,105 schools, including 141,436 secondary students and 187,908 primary pupils, began their academic year. Among them, 30,532 are Year One pupils, and 32,612 are in Form One. Additionally, 18,173 preschool children across 573 preschools also commenced their school sessions.
In Johor, State Education and Information Committee Chairman Aznan Tamin noted that 585,220 students from both primary and secondary schools entered the new school session, facilitated by 49,315 teachers. The first day proceeded without issues, reflecting well on the preparations by schools and parents.
Melaka saw 154,485 students return to 318 schools, with State Education Director Mahfudzah Mohamed Noor highlighting the inclusion of 13,922 Year One pupils and 14,021 Form One students.
In Sabah, the Education Department's deputy director-general for school operations, Zainal Abas, mentioned that 526,370 students and 43,763 teachers from 1,298 schools have started their sessions. The first week is dedicated to orientation and adjustment.
Penang's State Education Director Wan Sajiri Wan Hassan confirmed the return of 235,305 students to 396 schools. He emphasized the reduction in schools operating double sessions, addressing concerns over student density.
In contrast, Sarawak faced challenges with five schools unable to open due to flooding and damaged facilities, requiring home learning arrangements. State Education Director Omar Mahli assured allocations for necessary repairs, aiming for the resumption of normal schooling soon.
Negeri Sembilan saw 45,116 students, including those in special education programs, start their academic year, as noted by Education Director Khalidah Omar.
Pahang Education Deputy Director Ahmad Zamri Md Isa reported 244,799 students returning, including a significant number of Year One pupils and preschoolers.
Perlis Education Director Rose Aza Che Ariffin stated that the first school week would include activities to promote a positive and inclusive environment, involving 19,962 students and 26,982 pupils across the state.
