AMPANG JAYA: Two individuals suspected of driving under the influence were among three people detained during a New Year enforcement operation carried out by the Ampang Jaya District Police's Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division. The operation, which began at 9:30 p.m., aimed to curb traffic violations and ensure road safety.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ampang Jaya Police Chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail reported that the two men, aged 30 and 40, were apprehended for exceeding the legal blood alcohol limit under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Another individual was detained due to an outstanding warrant for previous summonses. The detained drivers were tested at the Ampang Jaya IPD using the Evidential Breath Analyzer II, confirming blood alcohol levels over the legal limit of 50/100ml.
Under Section 45A (1) of the RTA 1987, offenders may face up to two years of imprisonment, a fine ranging from RM10,000 to RM30,000, and potential suspension of their driving licenses for up to two years. Mohd Azam highlighted the severe consequences for violating this regulation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the law to ensure public safety.
The operation also included the inspection of 193 individuals and their vehicles, resulting in the issuance of 208 summonses for offenses such as modified exhausts, driving without a license, expired licenses, non-compliant number plates, and missing side mirrors. The most common violation was driving without a license, accounting for 63 of the summonses.
Additionally, 36 vehicles were seized under Sections 64(1) and 6(4) of the RTA 1987 for structural modifications to exhaust systems and driving by foreign nationals. These vehicles are currently held at the Ampang Traffic Police Station pending further investigation.
