No Cap on Higher Education Intake for SPM, STPM Holders, Announces Zambry

Kota kinabalu: There is no fixed limit on the number of students admitted into higher education institutions for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) holders; instead, they are given every possible opportunity to further their studies based on their interests and qualifications. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir emphasized this approach, highlighting the flexibility offered to around 100,000 SPM leavers and 75,000 STPM leavers this year to continue their education in various fields.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister affirmed that the opportunities are not restricted to universities alone but extend to skills-based fields such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). "We do not have a specific target (for university intake), as we are providing the broadest possible access. We ensure that those with the required qualifications are placed accordingly, as long as they are interested in furthering their studies," Zambry stated while addressing reporters at the Jom Masuk Universiti Zone II Sabah programme held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The event, which concluded today, was attended by Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin and UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor. Zambry highlighted that the initiative allows students to select their educational paths at the certificate, diploma, or degree level, aligning with their interests and the demands of current industry needs.

Zambry also shed light on the programme's role in guiding students through available opportunities and broadening their perspectives on potential courses. The programme features exhibitors from both public and private institutions, all monitored by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and saw a turnout of approximately 12,000 visitors on its opening day.

The programme is scheduled to continue in Perak on April 25 and 26, marking its final leg. Additionally, Zambry inaugurated the Dapur Siswa MADANI at Kolej Kediaman Tun Mustapha, a welfare project aimed at providing free meals to students from low-income (B40) families. The initiative, managed by 40 volunteers, ensures that no UMS student faces hunger, supporting the objectives of Zero Hunger and promoting good health.
