Orang Asli Children Must Receive Documentation Assistance Regardless of Parental Marriage Records

Accra:Pos Balar Orang Asli children should not be denied documentation due to problems with their parents' marriage records, according to Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, director-general of the National Registration Department (JPN). He emphasized that JPN would evaluate each case individually, considering facts, supporting documents, and circumstances, to determine the necessary actions, especially regarding birth registration.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Badrul Hisham highlighted the importance of respecting the customs and culture of the Orang Asli community. However, he noted that customary marriages and legal marriage registration requirements must be evaluated in line with existing laws. He stated that children should not be deprived of documentation assistance solely because of their parents' marriage record issues, and JPN is committed to finding solutions while respecting customs and adhering to the law.

Badrul Hisham announced that 143 New Generation MyKads had been issued to the Orang Asli community in Kelantan through the MEKAR Programme, which aims to bring registration services closer to them. He clarified that this number pertains only to MyKads issued through the programme and does not represent the total new MyKads given to the Orang Asli in the state.

JPN is working with the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) to gather identification data to ascertain how many Orang Asli in Kelantan lack a MyKad or birth certificate as of 2026. This data will help JPN review records and implement the MEKAR Programme effectively, ensuring that identified cases receive necessary follow-up and documentation assistance.

Additionally, JPN is addressing issues related to permanent resident card (MyPR) or red MyKad holders. The department is in the process of verifying the latest figures before making an official announcement. Badrul Hisham reiterated that each case requires assessment based on the individual's status and documentation to ensure appropriate measures are taken.
