Penang: The Penang government stated it has consistently addressed concerns raised by residents in Kampung Bagan Jermal about flash floods and structural cracks in their homes. Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo Sze Zeng emphasized his proactive engagement with residents, the Penang City Council (MBPP), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Woo referred to a recent news report alleging a lack of engagement by elected representatives with Kampung Bagan Jermal residents over issues of flash floods and structural damage. Woo refuted these claims, asserting that as the Pulau Tikus assemblyman, he and his team have always addressed the residents' concerns. He detailed actions taken, including flood risk monitoring, drain cleaning initiatives, and technical discussions with the Water Body A project consultant for flood mitigation.
Woo responded to a media report that highlighted the residents' appeal for immediate action from the developer and state government to address problems caused by the Water Body A Project. The project has reportedly led to structural damage and repeated flooding since its commencement in February last year. Mohamad Yakop Mohamad Dali, chairman of the Village Residents Association, mentioned that the project caused significant tremors from retaining pile installations and sea reclamation, resulting in structural cracks. Despite numerous complaints and meetings with stakeholders since last July, residents claimed no substantial action was taken.
Woo further elaborated on the initiatives undertaken, including securing a RM100,000 allocation from the DID on November 26 for river upgrades, scheduled for implementation next year. Additionally, CMI is conducting a hydrological study to address long-term flooding risks. Woo mentioned a detailed study underway to assess the cause of the structural cracks, assuring that if the Water Body A Project is responsible, appropriate compensation will be provided to the affected residents. He reiterated the state government's commitment to finding the best solutions for Kampung Bagan Jermal residents and continuing to engage directly with them.
