Perak: Nearly three million vehicles are expected to enter Perak via the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and federal roads in the days leading up to the Chinese New Year on Jan 29. Perak Road Safety Council (MKJR) deputy chairman, Datuk Nor Sham Rahman, indicated that the surge in traffic is anticipated to start on Jan 27 and 28, with another increase expected on the weekend following the celebration as people return to the federal capital.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nor Sham highlighted that traffic from Tanjung Malim to Parit Buntar could see between 2.5 to 3 million vehicles, including those using federal roads, passing through the state during the peak period before Chinese New Year. Motorists, particularly from Kuala Selangor, Banting, and Sabak Bernam, are advised to utilize the West Coast Expressway (WCE) to reach Changkat Jering before re-entering the North-South Expressway (PLUS) to ease congestion.
Nor Sham shared this information during a press conference following the launch of a Road Safety Campaign for the 2025 Chinese New Year celebration. The campaign is a joint effort by MKJR Perak, the Perak branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, the Road Transport Department (RTD), and Petronas at Lotus's Bercham.
The campaign includes several initiatives such as free engine oil changes for 200 motorcycles, 200 helmet replacements, and 50 car wash coupons. Additionally, exhibition booths featuring government agencies and local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are part of the event.
Meanwhile, Nor Sham advised highway users to adhere to suggested travel times (TTA) to avoid traffic congestion and comply with road regulations. She urged motorists to check the travel schedule before starting their trips to ensure a more comfortable and efficient journey, along with ensuring their vehicles are in good condition.
Perak MKJR also reminded motorists to plan their journeys during this festive season due to the expected increase in traffic flow. Additionally, users should ensure sufficient balance in their e-wallets and Touch 'n Go cards to prevent issues at toll plazas.
