Kampar: The state government is planning to establish a tagal system in the Kampar district as a measure to conserve river fishery resources which also has the potential to promote eco-tourism activities to domestic and foreign tourists. State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee Chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi stated that the proposal would be discussed further with the Perak State Fisheries Department, local authorities (PBT), and the Kampar District and Land Office (PDT) to identify a suitable location.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kampar has many rivers rich in various local fish species such as tengas and sebarau. The tagal system aims to conserve these fish populations and ensure the sustainability of the river ecosystem. This community-based river management system could also become a new tourism attraction in Kampar, similar to the conservation efforts in Sabah for pelian or kelah fish.
Mohd Azlan, who is also the Tualang Sekah assemblyman, released 5,150 baung kuning and river lampam fish seeds during the opening of a competition. He noted that the tagal system could open up new economic opportunities for local residents through the development of ecotourism activities, particularly those based on fisheries resources.
The programme, organised by the Perak State Kitesurfing Association, marked its fifth edition and was attended by 150 local and foreign participants. The competition involved a 15-kilometre route from Kampung Jahang, Gopeng to Kuala Dipang, with participants divided into groups covering a distance of about 1.5 kilometres.
This event highlighted fly fishing techniques, with participants catching lampam species to determine competition scores. Additionally, 15,000 baung and lampam fish seedlings were released to support the conservation of river fishery resources.
