Arau: Realising the importance of skills through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which can enhance job employability, Dr. Syamsurina Arshad, 42, decided to pursue a Certificate in Electrical Technology programme at the Arau Community College.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Syamsurina, who obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2019, said that the combination of academic qualifications and technical skills can produce a more competent workforce that meets industry needs.
"TVET is an excellent field. Regardless of age or background, do not be shy to learn and add knowledge. Academic knowledge is important, but skills are equally important," she said when met by Bernama after receiving her Certificate in Electrical Technology at the ninth session of the 2026 Northern Zone Polytechnic and Community College Convocation Ceremony at Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (PTSS) here today.
The Research Officer at the Development and Biodiversity Division of the Perlis Forestry Department said she chose the electrical field because she wanted to prove that a field often dominated by men can also be ventured into by women.
"The decision to pursue the Electrical Technology Certificate programme was to add practical skills as well as challenge myself in a field different from my academic expertise. For me, knowledge knows no boundaries and does not recognise titles or academic levels.
"Even though I already hold a PhD, I believe the learning process must continue because knowledge never stops. I took this certificate for my own benefit and hope the knowledge gained will also benefit others," she said.
Meanwhile, Arau Community College, in a statement in conjunction with the convocation ceremony, stated that Syamsurina's success elevates the dignity of TVET education at the Community College level as an inclusive lifelong learning hub for all layers of society regardless of existing academic background.
For the record, the convocation ceremony runs from August 3 to 9, gathering 6,104 graduates from Polytechnics and Community Colleges in Perlis, Kedah, and Penang.
